Atheran was one of the oldest Zaian left alive, who took a great interest in the Tarsins. It was he who first contacted them in the distant past, and had been quietly suggesting the right direction for them ever since. Unfortunately, not even he foresaw the cataclysm. The last part of his life saw the creation of the Archive, with Atheran as its High Chronicler, in the desperate attempt to preserve anything they could.
He was known for personally leading expeditions into ancient computer banks of various worlds, using Zaian techno-sorcery, as the Tarsins called it, to fight off the nightmares spawned in the cataclysm. But even Zaian have limits, as the Archive discovered. Atheran met his end battling the demon-engines of Ûnalîar, some eight thousand years ago, along side the Prophet Niren-Sûl. A line of mortal human Chancellors has filled his place in the Archive ever since; and while they have been forgotten by time's long march, Atheran has not faded from memory.
The death of Atheran had the profound effect of spreading the Zaian faith deeper into the Coalition, as any perceived martyrdom is wont to do. With no immortal to walk the line separating the clerical and the secular, the Archive was set on the road to becoming a house of mystics, theologians, historians, and all those that fell in between.
