The Old Coalition was a mysterious entity that received its name from Archive chroniclers who had no better name for it. The immortal zaian made referrals to a coalition in the early days of the Empire, but never elaborated on it. Seeking to lay claim to the heritage of their more illustrious ancestors, the Emperors began to refer to themselves ruling a new Coalition, which it was anything but.

The most concrete knowledge on the Old Coalition comes from the military legacy it left behind. Vast fleets survived the cataclysm, most of them apparently mothballed and in long-term storage. So too did the perpetrators of the worst part of the cataclysm: the Undying and their spawn. It is clear that the Old Coalition had highly advanced and durable technology, some of which is still in service to this present day, and almost always outclasses modern products. One exception is ether-based technology, thanks to the science and foundations behind it surviving in whole.

Knowledge about everything else is circumstantial at best. It is known that Hethorîon had a republican government at the time, which some modern chroniclers believe to mean that the Old Coalition really was a coalition of separate and independent governments. However, the presence of a standardized fleet and army indicates this was not actually the case. Another interesting piece of evidence is the presence of a genetic bottleneck in all modern Tarsins. These tests were done so long ago that Sǎrthîon is still listed as a kingdom in the Empire, but the results are still telling: at some point several thousand years prior to the Empire, the Tarsin population was reduced severely...
